We were encouraged that The Journal News co-hosted the Oct. 24 Westchester County Executive debate between Rob Astorino and George Latimer, but the wide-ranging event only underscores the need for a night dedicated to the issue that has brought attention to Westchester like no other — housing.

Since the era depicted in the HBO miniseries about Yonkers’ late-1980s affordable housing wars, Westchester’s cost-of-living has skyrocketed while its wages have remained relatively stagnant. Currently, the county ranks as the fifth most expensive place to live in America. Yet, somehow, 1,797 of our residents are homeless,100,000 struggle under the poverty line, and most apartment dwellers — 53.3 percent, to be exact —spend over a third of their incomes on rent, violating the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development threshold for affordable housing....
