Founded in 1994 by welfare recipients in New York City working to fight unjust welfare policies, we have since expanded our organization to include working on multiple issues in three additional communities in the Hudson Valley. Our long-term vision is to build statewide power to win important political and policy wins at the state level. Our core organizing issues include fighting for a just social safety net, good jobs and access to them, truly affordable housing, a participatory democracy, and a fair share tax system. We have a strong electoral program that is run by our affiliated 501c4 organization, CVH Power. Community Voices Heard Unpaid Policy Internships Summer 2013

Community Voices Heard (CVH) is a grassroots organization led by welfare recipients, public housing residents and low-income people of color fighting to make the policy decisions that impact their lives. CVH has chapters in New York City, Yonkers, Newburgh, and Poughkeepsie and has campaigns to improve policy around welfare/ workforce development, public housing, and building sustainable communities in low-income areas where corporate development and gentrification threaten to displace people.

CVH seeks student researchers for unpaid internship positions. For the Summer of 2013 we are looking for a minimum commitment of 35 to 40 hours per week, but are open to part-time schedules if organizational needs can be met. We would be open to considering a portion of this time to be conducted off-site, while the rest would be done at one of the CVH offices in NYC, Yonkers, Newburgh or Poughkeepsie.

The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct timely, high-quality research on a range of issues related to our campaign areas in the communities where CVH members live, as well as assisting in the development and implementation of policy campaigns. Issue areas may include, but are certainly not limited to: NY County work support programs, city budgets, vacant properties, welfare programs, participatory budgeting, public housing issues, and more.

Prior knowledge of these issues is a plus, but certainly not required. Ideal candidates will possess strong research skills, the ability to write clearly for a range of audiences and a strong dedication to social justice. They should be good-natured and be able to work productively in a lively (sometimes boisterous!) community based, membership-led organization. We are currently accepting applications.
