Statement on the resignation of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo

Today is a historic day filled with relief for many New Yorkers. For too many years, we have seen the abuse of power and now proven claims of sexual harassment from Governor Andrew Cuomo and his Executive Chamber. Cuomo’s daily politics as usual stops today. We hope Cuomo's resignation brings forth a new era where abusive practices towards women and communities of color are no longer tolerated.

“Cuomo's resignation was brought forth by courageous survivors who could no longer be silent about their treatment and abuse. We applaud Attorney General Letitia James who moved forward an investigation that was thorough and centered on the truth. For years, Cuomo has not only abused and harassed women who worked for him, but whole communities--particularly communities of color, which he used as a pawn in his thirst for power. We hope that Cuomo's reckoning and demise is the beginning of a new era where abuse of communities of color, women and others are not seen as politics as usual. Thank you to the survivors, Attorney General James, and all the advocates and organizers who have been fighting Cuomo's abusive practices for years,” said Juanita Lewis, Incoming Executive Director, Community Voices Heard.

While this day has been a long time coming, the reality is New York continues to face many challenges impacting the health, safety and well-being of all residents, such as recovering from a pandemic and continued housing & food insecurity. Our fight remains the same for a truly equitable New York State, now more than ever.
